Context:

We asked by a prestigious watch manufacturer specializing in upmarket watches to carry out a study of its packaging products and facilities. By packaging, we mean all the tools and equipment used to transport, store and “Protect/Safeguard” the watch components throughout the supply chain flow (from the watch component suppliers to the finished watch).

A multidisciplinary team (2 GoConcept engineering consultants and myself for the purchasing aspect) explored the expected requirements:

  • Consistency of dimensions (stackable format).
  • Easy handling in an automatic storage system.
  • Batch and unit packaging.
  • Ease of use for users (quick to open and close).
  • Traceability (geolocation, batch number, labeling, IOT, etc.).
  • Protection of parts (electrostatic, shock, scratch, anti-magnetic, UV, atmospheric protection, etc.).
  • Life cycle: management from creation to recycling (no. of wash cycles).
  • Ecological
  • Maintenance (washing, cleaning, maintenance, etc.).
  • Compatibility of format with suppliers.

  • Gathering information about internal and external constraints.
  • Gathering information about cross-project constraints.
  • Drafting several specifications files.
  • Creating and validating the packaging purchasing strategy.
  • Technology watch: embedded intelligence and traceability.

  • Working session with approved suppliers (engineering competitor) in order to develop functional prototypes.

  • Confirmation of the central role of packaging in the development of the supply chain 4.0.
  • A recommended overall approach: cross-profession with complete management of traceability and data collection via embedded intelligence.
  • Design of future packaging in an eco-friendly manner.
  • Validation of project ROI in line with client expectations.

My background:

I have a Master’s degree in International Purchasing from KEDGE (Bordeaux). Before joining Albert & Co:
-I started my career in sales. Based in Shanghai for 6 years, I was in charge of setting up a distribution network in China for an electrical equipment manufacturer based in Alsace (France).
-For the last 15 years, I have been in purchasing and have worked in various areas (local, international, Indirect, Direct purchasing and processes) in different sectors: Rail, Fast-moving consumer goods (FMGC), Automotive, Energy and Watchmaking.
I joined Albert & Co in 2019 as a consultant in order to discover new sectors and use the skills I had acquired in large organizations to help smaller, less structured organizations.
